Nocturnes for an Insomniac is a series of semi-programmatic nocturnes for piano, meant to illustrate an insomniac's battle to sleep. The first movement represents an insomniac just settling down for the evening. Though, they are unable to settle in as various intrusive thoughts bombard them. The second movement represents the insomniac tossing and turning in bed, trying to escape into sleep. Finally, the third movement represents the surreal images that invade the mind as it passes back and forth between dreams and reality, until they experience the sweet release of REM.
